Meet the Student Orientation Coordinators and Leaders

Each year, students apply to represent the University of Mary Washington during New Student Orientation.  These students are leaders on campus and are ready to welcome the incoming students to Eagle Nation! It’s a Great Day to be an Eagle!

SamA

Samantha Amos: Orientation Coordinator

Samantha Amos is a senior, Psychology major from Orange, VA. She is the President of the Campus Programming Board, Manager at the University Center, Philanthropy Chair of Alpha Mu Sigma, and a three year veteran of the Orientation Team. After graduation, she plans on going to graduate school in hopes of receiving a Masters in High Education and later become a Director for Student Activities.

Alex

Alexander Clegg: Orientation Coordinator

Alexander Clegg is a junior Social Environmental Science major with a minor in Economics. He’s a member of the Men’s Rugby Club, a contributing member of the UMW Honor Council, and a two-year veteran on the Orientation Team. He plans to study abroad in the spring of 2016 and graduate in the spring of 2017.

Anna

Anna Demarr: Orientation Coordinator

Anna DeMarr is a senior geography major in the 5 year masters for elementary education. She is the Director of Recruitment for UMW Washington Tour Guides, a volunteer Young Life Leader, and a three-year veteran on the Orientation Team. She enjoys long walks on the beach and all things Netflix.

Laura

Laura Gilchrist: Orientation Coordinator

Laura Gilchrist is a junior Historic Preservation major with a minor in Museum Studies. She is Vice President of the Junior Class Council, a member of UMW’s only show choir ENCORE!, and a Washington Guide. She believes people should be three things in life: Classy, Sassy, and Fabulous.

Sam Kasner: Orientation Coordinator

Sam Kasner is a senior psychology major from Northern Virginia. She is the captain of the women’s club soccer team and vice president of the Campus Programming Board. Sam also works in the office of Student Activities and Engagement as the Senior Student Coordinator for OrgSync. Sam has no idea what she wants to do after graduation (and it’s not at all freaking her out).

Victoria

Victoria Anderson: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Victoria Anderson in a junior History Major in the 5 year masters for Elementary Education. She is a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters and member of Reel Deals. Her favorite activity is tie-dying just about everything. She plans on teaching English abroad after graduating in 2017.

Dalton

Dalton Baughn: Orientation Leader (Session 1, 3, and 5) 

Dalton Baughn is a part of the class of 2018, he is a Classics major and will hopefully specialize in classical archaeology.  Dalton is very active on campus with activities including working in the theatre department’s costume shop and he is also a member of Alpha Mu Sigma.  Dalton is very passionate about friends, fun, and very intense dance parties.

Shannon B

Shannon Becker: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Shannon Becker is a sophomore, who hopes to major in Biology and Latin. She is Trivia and Karaoke chair for the Campus Programming Board, a member of the Classics Club, and the Honors Program. Shannon enjoys reading, listening to music, and being around people she loves.

Kadie

Kadie Bennis: Orientation Leader (Session 1, 3, and 5)

Kadie Bennis is a junior majoring in Geology and minoring in French. She is the Bingo Chair on the Campus Programming Board, the President of Pokémon Club, and a member of the Asian Student Association and Video Game Club. In her free time, she enjoys writing fiction and poetry, playing Pokémon and the Sims, reading, and having spontaneous movie nights with her roommate.

Stephanie

Stephanie Buckler: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Stephanie Buckler is a junior, Latin major with a math minor in the Education Program. She is from Fredericksburg, VA. She is highly involved in UMW Clubs including being co-president of Classics Club, vice president of ASL Club and President of the Mathematical Association of America, and the Programming Chair of ARH. Stephanie is the biggest fan of board and card games, and will almost never turn down the chance to play.

Charlotte

Charlotte Burch: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Charlotte Burch is a sophomore Creative Writing major in the Elementary Education program. She is the New Member Class Chair of Alpha Mu Sigma, Young Women’s Leadership Program, an employee at the University Center, and is new to the Orientation Team. After graduation, she hopes to move back north and work as a kindergarten teacher.  ​

Timmy

Timmy Caish: Orientation Leader (Session 2, 4, and 6)

Also known as Timmy Boi, he is a very outgoing, open person born and raised in the most country town he knows: Greene County, Va. Timmy loves to run/cycle long distance and speak Spanish. He tends to think of himself as an open book, so feel free to turn his pages!! He is the Technology Coordinator for SGA, President of Willard and Virginia, and tutors Spanish.

Megan

Megan Connor: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Megan Connor is a Junior majoring in History! She is involved with UMW Phonathon where they call parents and Alumni for their support for UMW, she a member of Phi Alpha Beta (our History honor society), of course, an Orientation Leader! Some fun facts about her are that she has dual citizenship, she can drive manual shift, and she LOVES pugs!

Madison

Madison Doehler: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Madison Doehler is a sophomore student at UMW planning to major in Psychology and minor in Middle Eastern Studies. She a Washington Tour Guide, involved in Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and Circle K International, and loved everything about Mary Washington and campus life!

Nick

Nick Eghtessad: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Nick Eghtessad is a senior Business major from Woodbridge, VA.  He is a captain of cross country team, a research assistant at Fairfield Technologies in downtown Fredericksburg, and was an RA in Bushnell Hall last year.  He has great hair and love kittens and tacos more than anything else in the world.

Janaye

Janaye Evans: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Janaye Evans is a junior, Historic Preservation major from Westampton, New Jersey. She is a proud member of the UMW Enigma Color Guard and enjoys performing at local high schools throughout Northern Virginia. She believes that there is nothing in the world that a 30 second dance party can’t fix.

Shannon Finney: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Shannon Finney is a sophomore English major in the 5 year Secondary Education program from Northern Virginia. She is also Vice President of Sophomore Class Council, a volunteer Washington Guide, and a mentor for the Young Woman’s Leadership Program of UMW. This is her first time being an Orientation Leader, and she can’t wait to get to know all of her students!!

Marc

Marc Gehlsen: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Marc Gehlsen is a junior Spanish and Linguistics double major from Nokesville, Virginia. He is the Director of Programming for the UMW Washington Tour Guides, a member of the Honor Council, and the leader of the upper class section of Green Housing on campus. He can almost always be spotted around campus with a cup of coffee in his hand.

Sophia

Sophia Hamdan: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Sophia Hamdan is a sophomore English major with a minor in Practical Ethics.  She is the Vice President of the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Team; English, Linguistics, and Communications Club; and Rise PEER Mentoring.  She loves books and anything related to Lord of the Rings.

Danny

Danielle Howard: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Danielle Howard is a junior from Richmond, Virginia. She is double majoring in Political Science and English and double minoring in Digital Studies and Social Justice. She is heavily involved with the James Farmer Multicultural Center and majority of the cultural clubs on campus. She can document the rise and fall of Kanye and hopes to be the future president of the United States of America.

Diana

Diana Inthavong: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Diana Inthavong is a senior from Bristow, Virginia. She is a double major in Art History and Historic Preservation. On top of being an Orientation Leader, Diana is also a member of the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team, the Honor Council President, and a Resident Assistant. Coffee, architecture, and puppies are among her favorite things, and she hopes to pursue a graduate degree in Architectural History/ Conservation.

Morgan

Morgan James: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Morgan is a junior Social Environmental Science and German double major, and she’s hoping to go to law school! On campus, she works as the Sustainability Coordinator for the University and serves as the student co-chair on the President’s Council on Sustainability. She’s a member of quite a few clubs, including Campus Programming Board, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and UMW Ambassadors.

Jesse

Jesse Jones: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Jesse Jones is a sophomore from Northern Virginia, who’s planning to major in Business. He’s a member of the club baseball and basketball teams, he’s also a member of Best Buddies, and he’s the marketing director of the student organization called the Talons. He really enjoys watching sports of all kinds and playing them as well.

Mariam

Mariam Khan: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Mariam Khan is a junior from Arlington, VA. She is a International Affairs and Women and Genders Studies double major. She is heavily involved with the the James Farmer Multicultural Center and many of the cultural clubs on campus. She believes activism is the key to change. She also enjoys traveling, hiking and Netflix.

Jackie

Jackie Khawand: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Jackie Khawnad is a junior mathematics major for Salisbury, MD. This is her first year as an orientation leader, but have been involved on campus as a representative for the class of 2017 on the Honor Council as well as Rituals and Traditions Chair in Alpha Mu Sigma. She doesn’t know what she will be doing after graduation, but with a math major she’s sure it will be something super nerdy.

Kalry

Karly Kremposky: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Karly Kremposky is a sophomore and future psychology major. She’s also a member of the astronomy club. Her favorite place is the aquarium and she spends her free time drawing.

Aaron

Aaron Mahmod: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Aaron Mahmod is a senior business major from Middlesex, Virginia. He’s been an orientation leader for the last three years and is also Vice President of CPB Productions for UMW’s Campus Programming Board (CPB).

Sequoi

Sequoi Phipps: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Sequoi is a senior Geography major and Urban Studies Minor. She volunteers as a local Young Life leader and is president of UMW’s only show choir, Encore! She loves to travel and recently went on a study abroad trip to Guatemala. Her not-so-secret-secret-ambition in life is to be Beyoncé one day.

Mac

Mac Plaia: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Mac Plaia is a junior Business Administration major with a possible Sports Management minor (or Security & Conflict Studies or Social Justice minor, it depends). She is Publicity Manager for the Campus Programming Board, as well as a member of the Set-Up Crew for the office of Student Activities & Engagement. The quote that she strives to live her life by is, “Do the things you fear, & fear the things you do.”

Ellen Poole (1)

Ellen Poole: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Ellen Poole is a sophomore majoring in physics from Fairfax, Virginia. She is a member of the University of Mary Washington Young Democrats, and she plays with them on their intramural basketball and soccer teams. She also sings with the women’s choir with the coolest voice part, the alto 2s. She enjoys numbers, limited edition flavored Oreos, and sometimes she gets so excited about things that she forgets to breathe.

Ben

Benjamin Purdy: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Benjamin Purdy is a junior International Affairs and Spanish double major from Alexandria, Virginia. Ben is a member of CPB Productions, Complex Council, The UMW Model UN club, and the eco club. He plans to study abroad in Argentina the spring semester of his junior year. He eventually will be working in some South American country for the state department, relaxing on the beach in a hammock in his spare time.

Jordan2

Jordan Riser: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Jordan Rider is a transfer student from Martinsburg, West Virginia majoring in English and minoring in Practical Ethics. Along with being an Orientation Leader, Jordan is a peer mentor in the RISE program. After graduating in Spring 2016, she plans to go to law school.

Lexi

Lexi Robinson: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Lexi Robinson is a junior Psychology and English double major, with a double minor in Neuroscience and Anthropology. She is a member of the Greenhouse Conceptual Learning Community, a contributing member of Divest UMW and the English, Linguistics, and Communications Club, and a Washington Guide. Lexi is a two-year veteran of the Orientation Team and also works in the IT Business Office.  She believes that as long as you keep fighting the good fight, nothing can stop you.

Emily

Emily Stallings: Orientation Leader (Sessions 2, 4, and 6)

Emily is a junior Psychology Major and in the Masters of Science in Elementary Education 5-Year Program from Chesapeake, VA. She is the Community Service Learning Coordinator for the Psychology Department. Emily is also the Vice President of Small Events and Promotions for Campus Programming Board and a member of UMW Ambassadors.

Ray2

Ray Celeste Tanner: Orientation Leader (Sessions 1, 3, and 5)

Ray Celeste Tanner is a senior Communication major in the Honors Program. While at UMW, she works at the Speaking and Writing Centers and over breaks enjoys babysitting. In addition to being an Orientation Leader, she is the President of the Association of Residence Halls and a volunteer Washington Guide. Ray Celeste has experience as a UPC bingo caller, a greeter for The Great Lives Lecture Series, and volunteer at just about any UMW-related event. In her spare time she likes to eat, watch Netflix, and play trivia. She has seen almost every episode of The Golden Girls and can quote just about every line from Pitch Perfect. All of this information is secondary to the fact that she can both do the “Mashed Potato” (dance), and lick her elbow- just not at the same time.
