About January Orientation

Mission

The University of Mary Washington’s New Student Orientation welcomes all incoming first-year and transfer students and their families to campus.  The Division of Student Affairs and the Orientation Staff are committed to making students and their families feel welcomed, involved, and connected to the University.  At Orientation, students meet other incoming and current students, register for academic courses, and learn more about the UMW campus, policies, and traditions.

Orientation is a mandatory experience for new students entering the university. New students entering during the spring semester attend January orientation while those entering during the fall semester attend summer orientation. During orientation, incoming students will be introduced to an orientation leader (OL) who will guide them through their next steps.  The OLs will introduce them to aspects of campus, academics, and resources available to them as they transition to academic and student life at UMW, and generally start to become acquainted with activities that they can be involved in at UMW.

There is no up front cost for students for the required Orientation program as it will be billed to your account.

We are excited to welcome you as a new student at Mary Washington this spring.  We hope you have seen recent messages from UMW regarding vaccination requirements and student testing from Thursday, December 30.  Please review this information carefully.  It is our hope that our students return to campus safely.  As the email indicates, we will begin the first few days of the semester with virtual classes.  While we had hoped to welcome all new students in person, we are shifting to a virtual orientation for Friday, January 7 as well.  The official welcome will begin via Zoom at 12 p.m. This zoom link will be sent to you via your UMW email on Thursday, January 6 by 5 pm.

Prior to the 12 p.m. start, Academic Services will offer advising appointments and course registration assistance.  If you have not yet been advised, please contact Academic Services at advise@umw.edu.  Virtual advising appointments may also be scheduled individually on Wednesday and Thursday.  Please include your phone number for quicker follow up.

If you have been advised but need assistance or have questions about registering for courses, please contact admit@umw.edu.  Virtual course registration assistance will also take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3-5 p.m (see your UMW email for zoom link and passcode).  You must be advised before you can register.

Registration opens mid-November! For more information on how to register and to access the link, click here.
