First Year Students

I saw a charge for “New Student Programming” on my UMW Bill, what’s that for?

  • “New Student Programming” covers Orientation, New Student Arrival, and the extended FSEM peer mentor programming through the fall for the students.
  • New Student Orientation includes: program materials, meals during orientation and new student welcome, an overnight stay, class registration and advising, the common read book, as well as social evening programming to get to know other students! Students will also be assigned to an Orientation group lead by a current student Orientation Leader.
  • New Student Arrival includes: a class-wide discussion of the common read book, Honor Convocation, the Community Welcome Fair, Eagle Gathering, the President’s Ice Cream Social, academic workshops, and as always, social activities every night leading up until the start of classes!
  • New first-year students are each assigned an FSEM peer mentor. These peer mentors are available to you to connect with while you start your journey here as an eagle!

Transfer Students

  • “New Student Programming” covers Transfer Orientation, New Student Arrival, and the extended mentor programming through the fall for the students.
  • Transfer Orientation includes: program materials, meals during orientation and new student welcome, class registration, class registration, and advising! Students will also be assigned to an Orientation group lead by a current student Orientation Leader.
  • New Student Arrival includes: Honor Convocation, a Transfer Success Day, luncheon with VIPs prior to the start of the academic year, the Community Welcome Fair, Eagle Gathering, the President’s Ice Cream Social, academic workshops, and as always, social activities every night leading up until the start of classes!
  • Transfer are provided with a Transfer Semester Experience. These programs are designed specifically for transfer students and cover different transitional topics as well as provide for networking opportunities.

First Year Guests

What is a Guest of Orientation?

  • Any person, ages 7 and up, who will be attending Orientation alongside the enrolled student who is not enrolling themselves.

Why are guests charged $40 to attend?

  • Guests receive programming materials, meals, and an opportunity to meet and engage with the faculty and staff who will be assisting your students in registering for classes.
  • Lodging is not available on campus and it is not included in this fee. Please visit: Lodging and Accommodations to take a look at special rates close to UMW.
