Orientation Leader and FSEM Peer Mentor Position Description and Expectations

The Office of Student Involvement is selecting Orientation Leaders (OLs) and FSEM Peer Mentors (PMs) to represent the University of Mary Washington for New Student OrientationNew Student Arrival and throughout the Fall semester. This selective, paid position will serve UMW by helping welcome incoming students and guests to campus. Orientation Leaders serve as mentors through the summer orientation process and then transition into FSEM Peer Mentors in the fall semester by serving as a resource and helping students adjust to college life.

Requirements

Orientation Leader: Spring/Summer 2021

  • Must attend weekly trainings during the following Wednesdays from 4:00pm – 6:00pm
    • March 10th
    • March 17th
    • March 24th
    • March 31st
    • April 7th
    • April 14th
  • Must attend May training
    • May 3rd
  • Must work June orientation
    • May 24th – June 25th
  • Must attend August training and New Student Arrival
    • August 9th – 22nd

Peer Mentoring: Fall 2021

  • Attendance at bi-weekly meetings
  • Communication with first-year seminar professor
  • Creation of multiple events to foster FSEM student engagement
  • Multiple readings as assigned

Additional Commitment

  • Must not study abroad during your employment: January 2021 through January 2022.
  • Must abide by state and university policies
  • Must sign and abide by the rules of a behavior contract
  • Must be in good academic (2.25 GPA requirement) and judicial standing at the time of application through the end of the position commitment
  • Cannot have outside employment during summer training, Orientation sessions, August training, and New Student Arrival
  • Cannot be registered for summer classes without prior approval from the Orientation professional staff

Expectations

  • Be a role model for incoming students during the summer Orientation program, fall New Student Arrival program, and as a peer mentor.
  • Represent the University of Mary Washington and the Office of Student Involvement as it relates to the Community Values
  • Be professional, dependable, responsible, energetic, flexible, and punctual

Orientation Leader Benefits

  • Orientation Leaders receive a stipend of $1,250 (before taxes) after the completion of duties in the summer
  • Orientation Coordinators receive a stipend of $1,500 (before taxes) after the completion of duties in the summer and $500 (before taxes) after the completion of duties in the fall.
    • Please note that Orientation Coordinators need to have a least one year’s experience as an Orientation Leader before applying
  • On-campus housing during summer training and Orientation sessions
  • Meals provided during summer training, Orientation sessions, August training, and New Student Arrival
  • Receive staff t-shirts, water bottle, and other Orientation items
  • Receive a unique student leadership opportunity
  • Meet and interact with a variety of University faculty and staff

FSEM Peer Mentor Benefits

  • Peer Mentors receive a total stipend of $250 for the semester (before taxes) which is paid out on a biweekly basis during the Fall semester
  • Early move-in (for on-campus students only) and meals provided during August training
  • 1 academic credit that will be applied as Experiential Learning credit
  • Receive a unique student leadership opportunity
  • Meet and interact with a variety of University faculty and staff

Application/Interviews:

There will be two separate application processes: one for returners and one for new applicants.

For new applicants:

  • Applications for new applicants will be posted on myUMW from Monday, October 19, 2020 through Friday, January 15, 2021
  • If you are selected there will be two rounds of interviews. The first interview will be a group interview to take place on Friday, January 22, 2021.
  • Following a positive group interview, you will then be asked to sign up for an Individual Interview time slot during the Spring semester.

For returning applicants:

  • Applications will be posted on myUMW from Friday, September 25th – Monday, October 19th.
  • If your application is selected you will be contacted to sign up for an Individual Interview time slot before the end of the Fall semester
